The EU has donated another two million euros to the Cyprus Committee on Missing Persons Project (CMP) which is responsible for exhuming, identifying and returning the remains of Greek and Turkish Cypriots who went missing during Turkey's 1974 invasion of the island.
This is the second contribution from the EU, which donated 1.5 million euros in 2007, making it the largest single donor supporting the CMP, said the government today. The latest donation will make it possible to exhume the remains of another 500 persons.
The CMP has"been proven to be one of the most successful confidence building and reconciliation measures" according to a government statement.
It "aims at closing a painful chapter in the history of the island and at contributing to the process of reconciliation between both communities. The participation of bi-communal teams of scientific, anthropologists and archaeologists at all stages of the process as well as the bi-communal composition of the Committee fosters the spirit of reconciliation of the CMP mandate."
