Evidence Tampering Probe - Lawyers Arrested
A Limassol public prosecutor and two lawyers have been arrested for questioning on suspicion of falsifying evidence in a deadly hit-and-run court case, said police.
Attorney acting for the public prosecutor Maria Neophytou, and lawyers George and Elias Konnari allegedly forged court documents and abused their power to help an 20-year-old defendant get acquitted of manslaughter after she ran a red light and hit a teenager in December 2007.
17-year-old Emilios Ioannou (left) was killed in the accident and the driver fled the scene but was arrested soon after. According to police, she tested positive drink-driving with a blood alcohol content of 70mg, far above the 22mg limit.
Neophytou has been remanded for four days, and father-and-son lawyers George and Elias Konnari have been released, said a police spokeswoman.
Police are investigating the suspects' bank accounts on suspicion they received money to falsify witness testimony about the accident. According to state radio news reports, the suspects colluded with the defendant's father in order to get the acquittal.
