Thousands of Football Fans Stuck in Gridlock

traffic jam nicosiaThousands of football fans were stuck in a standstill gridlock after police closed an entire section of the highway following two major football games in Nicosia.

There was only one lane open between Nicosia and Nisou, and then a stretch of highway that was completely closed after the Nisou turnoff.

"How stupid can they be? Why did they choose today to close the highway before 10.30pm, when half of Limassol came to Nicosia to see the game," said one extremely irate driver.

The old highway was chaotic as fans tried to get back home after the games, creating a traffic jam stretching from the beginning of Nicosia to Nisou.

"It took me an hour and 10 minutes to get from Nicosia to Nisou," said another driver.

Apollon played against Olympiakos and Ares against Omonia; Ares and Apollon fans are mostly Limassol based.
