Cyprus Marks Earth Hour

President Demetris Christofias marked Earth Hour last night by turning off the lights in the Presidential Palace and lighting candles spelling out SOS.

The event was an initiative of the Cyprus Green Party event and the lights went out between 8 pm - 9 pm as a message of support to the global campaign against climate change. The president left for Copenhagen this morning to represent Cyprus at the climate change conference.

"Cyprus is a member of the European Union, and the latest European Council decided to reduce pollutants by up to 40% by 2020. Everyone must realise that we live at the expense of future generations. "

Christofias also received a petition from the Environmentalist Party with several thousand signatures to support the global effort against climate change.
