Demetris Eliades New Defence Minister
He replaces Costas Papacostas, who resigned in the wake of the massive explosion at Evangelos Florakis naval base on July 11th.
The president and cabinet of ministers are doing frantic damage control amid multiple funerals held for the 13 victims of the blast, and a public outcry against the government's incompetence and negligence.
At 5.55am on Monday, the explosion ripped through fuel tankers at Vassiliko power station, cripping the island's main power supply for the foreseeable future. The force of the explosion was such that debris was scattered on the highway, one kilometre away. The blast was caused by explosives stored in containers that were confiscated from Cypriot-flagged MV Monchegorsk in 2009.
Eliades has accepted the double weight of two ministries, a situation that is hardly optimal. Questions may quite easily be raised in the near future as to how he can do both jobs effectively.
