European Parliament To Talk Turkey-Cyprus Tensions
The European Parliament (EP) is set to discuss tensions between Cyprus and Turkey over oil-and-gas exploration rights in the island's Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ).
The debate will start at 5.30pm today and will be chaired by EU High Representative Catherine Ashton, who has already stated that Turkey should avoid any action that will disturb good-neighborly relations and cause additional tensions.
In the most recent developments, Turkish seismic research ship K. Piri Reis has entered Cyprus' Exclusive Economic Zone (EEZ) without permission and is conducting tests in or near Block 12. Noble Energy has already set up its drill rig in Block 12 with the government's permission and has exploration rights along with Israeli company DELEK.
Other issues due to be discussed by the EP are Palestine's application to join the UN and the peace process in the Middle East. The situation in Palestine will be put to a vote on Thursday.
