Cyprus Arts & Events October 7th - November 1st

cyprus events artsby Natalie Haughton - The Festival for Peace and Reunification takes place tonight Friday 7th October at 6:00 o’clock at the Ledra / Lokmaci checkpoint in Nicosia, organised by the bi-communal peace initiative United Cyprus.

Members from both communities will march to Eleftheria Square and move towards Archbishop Makarios avenue to reach the Nicosia Park (behind the Parliament building) where the Festival will take place. There will be a photographic exhibition, discussions and film corner, performances by T/C group sol Anahtari, poetry readings, and a concert with Koulis Theodorou and Umut Al Bayrak.

Kypriaki Gonia in Larnaka  presents a new series of  paintings by Michael Westwall as well as of   paintings by  Leonidas  Papasavvas. Duration: October  6 - 15, 2011. 

There’s a quiz night tonight (Frid 7th Oct) to raise money for Cans for Kids.  It’s at the EOGABA clubhouse between the Junior school and the park.  8.30pm start and its €5 entry fee per person.  Food and drink available.  Call 99 666011.

Live flamenco and pop music can be heard at Marco Polo in the Holiday inn tonight (7th Oct) with the band Gypsyland.  Fronted by Antoine Kiko Motos (former lead of the Gipsy Kings).   Starts at 9pm.  Tickets are €20. Call 22 712712.

On Saturday 8th Oct there’s the fund raising event Festival of Joy in Acropolis Park.  It’s from 4-8pm and there will be lots of stalls and fun for the children plus live music.  

The Grammar School has organised a charity bike ride which takes place on Sunday Oct 9th.  The ride will leave at 10am from the Ledra Palace checkpoint and end at the Cyprus Institute of Neurology and Genetics.  You can download an entry form from the website www.grammarschool.ac.cy or find it on facebook GS charity Cycle ride.

Learn how to navigate without the use of Sat Nav at the Orienteering Day Out on Sunday Oct 9th.  It starts at 9.30am until 1pm. at the kiosk in Athalassa Park.  Course length will be 4.5km and there will be 12 control points to find in order. Cyprus Has Talent Season 2 gets underway at the the 7 Seas Live Music Bar in Limassol. Aspiring artists from around the country are given the chance to perform in one of the best live music scenes in Cyprus.  The first live show will begin at 8.30pm on Sunday, 9th October which is not a night to be missed. The remaining live shows will be on the 16th, 23rd and 30th of October and all shows will be aired on Capital TV (join Facebook.com/cyprushastalent for live updates).  Free entrance on the night (reservations can be made by calling 25 278 000).

Greek opera icon Maria Callas, her life and her loves, are the subject of a ballet performed by the Moscowia Russian Ballet.  Called ‘Sorceress Maris Callas’.  The dates for the performances are Oct 7th at the Limassol Garden theatre and Nov 3rd at the Strovolos Municipal theatre.  Tickets are on sale from www.cyprus –tickets.com or call 7000 9303.

Grammy award winner and platinum producer Lil Jon will be live in concert for the first time in Cyprus.  He’ll be at the University of Cyprus Indoor Stadium (Aglantzia-New Campus) on Saturday the 8th of October. Sunday Oct 9th it’s the annual charity event, the Steliou Foundation International Bazaar.  It’s a great day out for all the family with lots of stalls, food and entertainment.  Doors open at 10am.  Make sure you come and visit the British High Commission Stall!

In 2009 Felicity Aston led an all-female team from around the Commonwealth to ski to the South Pole.  Members of the expedition came from Ghana, Singapore, and Jamaica.  It included the first Cypriot to ski to the South Pole, Stephanie Solomonides.   On Thurs 13th Oct there’s the World Premiere of the documentary,  ‘CALL OF THE WHITE’ about this Commonwealth Antarctic Expedition.  The screening is hosted by the Cyprus Computer Society and will be shown at the University of Nicosia at 7.30pm.  Following the screening, the expedition leader Felicity Ashton, along with Stephanie and the Singaporean participant will take part in a Q&A session.  If you wish to attend please register through the website www.ccs.org.cy  or 22460680.

On Sun Oct 16th the Donkey Sancturary in Vouni near Limassol are holding an Open Day.  It’s the official opening of their Education Centre and museum.  There’ll be a raffle, donkey grooming and a guided tour.  It’s from 10am-4pm, free admission.  www.donkeysanctuarcyprus.org

The Vintage Rhythms big band sound from the UK will be performing at a charity dinner and dance at The Coral Beach Hotel on Saturday, October 22 at 7.30pm.  Proceeds are going to St. Michael's Hospice. The Sunflower project is holding a fund raising Gala dinner and concert to raise money for Breast Cancer Awareness on Sat 22nd Oct.   The event will be held at Intercontinental Hotel at The Aphrodite Hills Resort.  Performing at the dinner will be the Italian soprano Tiziana Sojat, British tenor Martin Toal, Cypriot soprano Lenia Kallis and British violinist Craig Owen. The 3rd annual Aromatic and Healing Herbs of Cyprus workshop takes place from Oct 22nd – 23d at the Platres Cultura Centre.  There will be an exhibition as well.  It’s free but to attend registration is necessary via yioula@ypmbusinessconsultants.com by Oct 7th. 

Under conductor Edward Higginbottom, Haydn’s music ‘The Creation’ is being performed at an evening concert on Oct 26th at the Strovolos Municipal theatre. The concert features soprano Sofia Gargaloyan, tenor Thomas Hobbs and bass-baritone Kyros Patsalides together with the choir of New College Oxford. The postponed 3rd MetaLmorphosis Festival will now take place on October 28th.  This year, the Swedish melodic death metal band “Arch Enemy” will be live on stage together with performances by Plague of Angels (UK), Sonik Death Monkey (Cy), Disharmony (Gr) and The Fallen Within (Gr). If you hold tickets from the cancelled July show your tickets are valid for this new date.

Iced Earth, the American heavy metal band from Tampa, Florida, is performing in Cyprus on Dec 15th at Pavilion Hall.   Sonik Death Monkey is the support act. Tickets are €30 and are on sale from www.cyprusevents.net.

CHANGE OF DATE:-  The 2nd Quantum Nicosia Marathon and half Marathon  which was due to take place on  Oct 9th will now be on Dec 2nd 2012.

The 14th US University Fair is on Tues 11th Oct at the J.  William Fulbright Centre, next to the Ledra Palace Hotel from 4-8pm. There’ll be representatives from a number of American Universities together with information and advice on further education in the US.

The European University is offering to Modern Greek courses to adult foreigners working in Cyprus. The lessons begin on the 17th and 18th Oct. For more information call 227130o.
