Ship Runs Aground in Paphos, No Injuries
Sierra Leone-flagged ship Edro III has run aground on a beach along the coast of Paphos, near Agios Georgios sea caves, said police.
As the Albanian-owned cargo vessel was leaving Limassol port on Wednesday December 7th, it ran into mechanical problems and went adrift with its crew of 11 on board.
Rough weather pushed the ship towards the shoreline and it eventually ending up 30 metres away from dry land at around 6pm.
A British Bases helicopter airlifted five Albanian and two Egyptian crew members to Paphos, where they are in a hotel in good health, said a police spokeswoman.
The captain and engineer remained on board, she said.
So far there is no environmental damage from the shipwreck, said marine conservation group Nireas Marine Research.
