Turkish Petroleum Corp Set To Drill In N. Cyprus End February
The Turkish Petroleum corporation is set to start drilling for oil and natural gas on Febuary 28th in Syngrasi/Sinirustu village in Turkish-held Famagusta district, according to a statement from Turkish-Cypriot officials.
Studies on drilling for fossil fuels have been going 'full steam', according to the statement, and the drill site will be named 'Turkish Homeland 1'.
Turkey is proceeding illegally with oil and gas exploration in north Cyprus, a territory it has held since its invasion and occupation of the island in 1974. After the government decided to proceed with a contract to explore for offshore hydrocarbons with US company Noble Energy, Turkey announced an unlawful agreement with the 'TRNC' and will explore for oil without official permission from the only recognised government on the island - the Republic of Cyprus.
