Mary's Dinner Club Stories - Austrian Dinner
A total winner on the friend-making front … basically everybody exchanged phone numbers/connected on facebook the following day. What a fun group of interesting people with many things to share, many things in common and many good networking ideas – new friendships abound - that’s what dinner clubs are about!
And of course there was the food… for starters - a classic in traditional Austrian restaurants: ‘Griesnockerlsuppe’ – beef broth with fluffy, melt-in-your-mouth semolina-butter dumplings. They are also a personal favorite of mine for which I did make a quick phone call to my mom back home to be sure they’ll be ‘just like hers’. And they were - whew!
The main course: Wiener Schnitzel with parsley potatoes and salads. While it all sounds quite easy, the logistics of it turned out to be rather tricky as they are supposed to be freshly baked in hot butter just before being served. Thankfully my cheerful guests did not mind the open window and just gathered around the heater in the center of the room for a bit. They also did really well refilling their own welcome drink glasses while I was sizzling away. Thank you everyone for that!
The dessert: Sachertorte - something so famous that the number of recipes available seems almost unlimited it actually took a second try to get the ‘perfect one’ - all done the ‘real’ way with apricot-rum filling and chocolate cover. I was laughing because it was off the plates so fast, I hardly got a chance to take a picture.
Nonetheless, we ended up sitting around till past eleven sharing fun stories about the Scottish, the French, the Austrians… Once again – a great evening with good food, good networking and new friendships. Looking forward to next Saturday 's Malaysian dinner for more of the same!
