February Unemployment Rises to 37,874 Persons - CYSTAT
The number of unemployed people rose to 37,874 people compared to 37,102 in January, said the Cyprus Statistical Service (CYSTAT).
Compared to February 2011, there was a rise of 27.1 percent or the equivalent of an additional 8,068 people in the ranks of the unemployed.
The main sectors affected by unemployment are construction, trade, accommodation and food service activities, manufacturing (an increase of 1.059), public administration and newcomers to the labour market, reports CYSTAT.
The construction sector has also been affected by recent strikes by cement production workers at Vassiliko Cement Works, and a construction workers strike in February. The construction industry faces an accute shortage of cement due to the strike at Vassiliko, say analysts.
