Dams at 90% - Supply Sufficient for Two Years

kouris damAt 90% full, the island's supply from water reservoirs will last for two years in the worst case that there is no rain, and the biggest dam in the country - Kouris - is expected to overflow by the end of the month, said a Water Board spokesman in comments to state radio.

There is little chance of returning to the same situation as in 2008 when there was a four-year drought followed by a water shortage in which Limassol literally ran out of water. Since then, desalination plants have been built to cover any shortage from the reservoirs.

There has been heavy rain over the last three months, in Limassol during January, rainfall spiked to 130% higher than the norm.
