Cypriots Generating Highest Municipal Waste in EU

Cypriots generated 760kg of waste per person in 2010, the highest in the EU, according to Eurostat's survey for the year.
In addition, a whopping 80 percent of waste is sent to landfills, none of it is incinerated and only 16 percent is recycled, a paltry four percent is composted. Landfills are proven to be hazardous to the health and the environment, but the situation is clearly not improving.
For comparison purposes, in Belgium, which could be considered a best-case scenario, only one percent of waste is landfilled, 37 percent is incinerated, 40 percent is recycled and 15 percent is composted.
