Fire at Vassiliko Power Station Under Control - Report

fire at vassiliko stationA fire which broke out in a fuel tank at Vassiliko power station at 5.30pm today was extinguished within 50 minutes with no casualties or major damage, according to a report on state broadcaster CyBC.

The worst was avoided because the fire broke out in an empty fuel container and did not spread to the rest of the station. The container was one of those damaged in an explosion last year, and the fire started when a repair crew cutting into the roof of the container accidentally spread sparks, igniting some residual fuel.

Six fire engines arrived from emergency fire and rescue service EMAK in Kofinou and from Limassol and Larnaca.

The area is prone to fire outbreaks and is carefully guarded by the fire services.

Vassiliko was critically damaged in a deadly explosion in July 2011 and is in the process of being rebuilt.
