Old Limassol Port Polluted by Oil, Plastic - NIREAS

Old Limassol Port is littered with oil and plastic pollution around the construction site of the new Limassol Marina, said non-profit organisation Nireas Marine Research.

In a letter to the department of fisheries in the ministry of agriculture, Nireas reports 'ongoing heavy pollution from oil sludge and plastics by fishermen.'

The pollution was originally reported by a concerned citizen who called the department of fisheries but was told that it is not their responsibility.

"Further the person stated to us that workers involved in the construction site dump continuously building and other garbage in to the sea," said Nireas in a statement.

Questions are raised as to when the problem will be addressed and why there is no observer to protect the environment from the department of fisheries.
