Minister of Agriculture Opens Botanical Gardens in Akamas

botanical gardens in akamasA beautiful botanical garden in the Akamas was officially opened by Agriculture Minister Sophocles Aletraris, who said that the state is focusing on projects that will protect the environment while promoting economic development in the NATURA 2000-protected area.

The botanical gardens will contribute to tourism in the area and preserve the rich flora of the region, said Aletraris. Another project between Greece and Cyprus aims to upgrade nature trails in the Akamas and produce a modern tourist guide by 2013, he said. There are also two LIFE programmes to protect and conserve forest areas, said Aletraris.

There are dozens of endemic, rare and protected plants in the Akamas and many of them are at risk from human activities like overgrazing, fire, climate change, and over collection, said the minister.

The event takes place a few weeks before World Environment Day on June 5th.
