Denia Village Evacuated for Controlled Bomb Explosion

The village of Denia in Nicosia was temporarily evacuated while bomb experts carried out a controlled explosion on a 500-pound bomb that was dropped on Cyprus in 1974 by a Turkish warplane, said chief of police Michalis Papageorgiou.

The bomb never exploded after it was dropped many decades ago, but was dangerously close to the village school so the army brought in explosives experts from Greece to help them with the operation which started early this morning and finished at around 2pm.

Village residents were asked to leave their homes and to keep windows and doors open to minimise any damage from shockwaves.
