High-Level EU Environment Meetings During Cyprus Presidency
There will be at least seven high-level meetings held in Cyprus when the island takes up the EU's rotating presidency, said ministry of agriculture Permanent Secretary for the Environment Egly Pantelaki.
The presidency will kick off with the highest-level summit, the Informal Meeting of Ministers for the Environment and Climate Change on the 7th and 8th of July, she said.
On the 5-6th July there will be a meeting of climate change experts, and later in the same month - on the 9th-10th July - there will be a meeting of environment attaches.
In September there will be a meeting of nature directors, and on 8-9 October the meeting of the working group on ground waters. In November there will be the Conference on the Water Blueprint (26-27th) and on the 27-29th November there will be a meeting of water and marine directors. Finally, on 5-6th December, there will be a meeting of the network of environmental inspectors.
High on the agenda is 'the nemesis of waste', said Pantelaki. A rise in environmental awareness in Cyprus would contribute to an improvement in the local situation, in which residents here are estimated to produce the highest per capita amount of waste in the EU.
