Turkish Warplane Disappears In Syria
A Turkish warplane with two pilots has vanished off the radar while flying over the Mediterranean Sea south-west of Hatay near Syria, according to Turkish news agency Anadolu Ajansi.
The F4 jet disappeared off the radar at 11.58, says the report, and search and rescue operations are being carried out in the region. According to Reuters, Syria shot down the plane, while other reports say that Russia had a hand in the jet's disappearance.
Tensions have been high between Turkey and Syria amid the deaths of thousands of protesters in Syria, and an influx of an estimated 10,000 refugees into Turkey.
The Hatay province was originally part of Syria's territory and voted by referendum to become part of Turkey. Tensions along the shared border rose earlier this year when Turkey accused Syrian troops of firing into its territory and injuring Turkish soldiers.
