Serbia EU Accession Talks By December?

Serbian ally Cyprus backs Belgrade to start EU accession talks by December this year, said Foreign Minister Erato Kozakou Marcoullis, who has just wrapped up a visit to the country in her EU presidency capacity.

The Cyprus presidency wishes for Serbia to start talks by the end of the year provided there is a positive recommendation from the Commission, she said.

"Mr. Dacic underlined his support to the country's european prospect and assured that Serbia will honor the commitments it has undertaken vis a vis the EU," said the minister.

Kosovo has also applied to start talks, but it is fairly unlikely that Marcoulis will visit it in person because Cyprus does not recognise it as a state. Nonetheless, officials have promised to follow the EU's lead on Kosovo, which is recognised by all but five members of the bloc. Marcoulis said that she would follow an 'impartial' policy on the country.

It was her first visit within Cyprus' EU presidency, and she is now due to arrive in Kosovo's neighbor Montenegro.
