Greece Suspends Damascus Embassy Operations

greece closes damascus embassyGreece has suspended its embassy operations in Damascus due to the deteriorating security conditions in Syria, according to a foreign ministry statement.

The Honorary Consulates in Aleppo, Latakia and Tartus will remain in operation, with instructions to provide all possible assistance to Greek citizens who are still in Syria. In addition, the five EU member-state embassies remaining in operation in Syria will provide consular assistance to Greek citizens, in accordance with the EU Treaty.

The EU, Cyprus and Bulgaria still have embassies operating in Damascus.

The Foreign Ministry repeated its travel advisory stating that Greek citizens must not travel to Syria for any reason whatsoever.
