Cyprus Consumer Prices Mixed Compared to EU Average

Cyprus consumer prices for 2008 varied widely compared to the EU average depending on the sector, according to the latest survey by Eurostat.

Overall, the island ranked 18th in the price level index, which includes data from 27 EU member countries plus 10 more countries (including candidate countries).

Cyprus scored the highest prices in the consumer electronics sector, which were 20% more expensive than the EU average. Household appliances were also 15% more expensive than the EU average.

Restaurants and hotels were 3% more expensive than the EU average, whereas Communication was 48% of the EU average, making Cyprus the cheapest EU member state for these services in 2008.

The most expensive country in the EU is Denmark, and the cheapest is Bulgaria, according to Eurostat.
