Exit polls put incumbent Nikos Anastasiades (DISY) in the lead ahead of challenger Malas (AKEL).
The smaller districts appear to confirm the exit polls, with Anastasiades the favourite in most of the early results.
Anastasiades ran on a platform of stability and it appears that the current sentiment favours the ‘safe hands’ approach. The memories of a disastrous economic policy between 2008-2013 haven’t faded enough for an AKEL-backed president to gain power without stiff resistance.
The second round of presidential elections went smoothly with a slightly higher voter turnout than the first round.
More to come as the results are announced.
