Vulnerable Citizens Will Have Electricity, Minister Orders

Vulnerable citizens whose health would be endangered without electricity will have an uninterrupted supply even if they have difficulty paying their bills, according to an order from Energy Minister George Lakkotrypis, as reported by the Cyprus News Agency.

The decree applies to those people whose lives would be endangered if their electricity were to be cut off. Cypriot households pay the highest electricity prices in the EU, and although vulnerable groups get a discount from the top prices, this discount only puts their payments at the EU average. For someone with significant health problems, it could mean the difference between life and death if they can't pay their bill.

More information and an application form for those eligible can be found on www.eac.com.cy or at the electricity authority's local branches.
