Average Age of COVID-19 Patients is 58.6 Years Old

The average age of COVID-19 patients is 58.6 years old, said the health ministry.

There are 286 patients with COVID-19, out of which 75 are in serious condition and 36 are intubated because they cannot breathe on their own.

In the latest developments, three more patients died on April 28, bringing the total to 306 COVID deaths. For the first time, the number of women who died of coronavirus rose past 34 percent. Two women, aged 78 and 88, died yesterday, increasing the female death rate to 35 percent versus 66 percent males.

The 88-year-old woman was vaccinated with the first dose and the other two patients were un-vaccinated.

Three days into a strict lockdown, another 845 COVID cases were confirmed yesterday, said the health ministry. The highest transmission rate is 2.19 percent in Larnaca.

Most of the cases were discovered by voluntary rapid testing around the island. A much smaller number of cases (2) were found at Larnaca and Paphos airports and in the National Guard (2).

India variant spreading in EU

On top of the UK variant, the recently-discovered India variant has started spreading in the EU. The European Centre for Disease Prevention and Control (ECDC) confirmed cases in Belgium, Germany, Ireland, the Netherlands, Switzerland, Guadeloupe and the UK.

Most cases are in the UK, reported Euronews.

COVID-19 patients face 10 variants

Scientists agree there are currently 10 variants. The new virus mutations stem from the UK, South Africa, Brazil and India.

Judging by the tidal wave of COVID-19 cases in India, the new variant discovered at the end of March is responsible for the immense surge. Titled B.1.617 – or the India variant – it is the 10th variant discovered within 14 months.

The double mutant variant appears to have caused humanitarian and medical emergencies in India. There are hundreds of thousands of new cases per day.

The UK, Germany, France and Belgium have suspended travel from India.
