Blogging for branding and influence

In the digital age, marketers have the additional challenge of creating blogs that are persuasive and show expertise without putting people off with the hard-sell approach. Finding this balance is what makes a successful blog, and promoting it correctly is what makes a blog popular and ultimately more influential.

Over time, an influential blog can convert more customers than a full-on advertising campaign, so it’s an initiative every company should take seriously.

Businesses can gain more respect, branding and exposure by creating a blog on their website, one that is interesting to their target market and updated regularly. A business’ blog should also be distributed through other credible and trustworthy websites; either by re-publishing, or by writing an entirely new post and including a link back to the business’ website.

Follow these basic seven tips on writing your business blog and watch your market and exposure grow:

  1. Put the most important information in the first paragraph, this shows that you know what you’re talking about, and sets the reader an agenda for the rest of the blog.
  2. Share your expertise to grow your reputation. This doesn’t mean giving away company secrets or proprietal information, it means being helpful, showing how you solved your customers’ problems and why people should trust your company with their money.
  3. Share case studies, but lose the jargon and summarise the lessons learned. Nobody has the time to wade through columns and columns of statistics or background when they’re reading on the Internet. Keep it short and sweet, and make the stats into headlines.
  4. Include images to keep readers engaged and trigger their imaginations. Your message will be more easily remembered.
  5. Always have a call to action to sign up for your company newsletter, follow your brand on social media, or other methods to stay in touch. This can lead to a deeper relationship over time and when the time is right, conversion into a customer.
  6. Ask for comments and feedback from your readers, think of it as market research.
  7. Make sure the blog is well-written, so it’s easy to read and makes a good impression.
