5.1 Magnitude Larnaca Earthquake Rattles Homes Island-wide
January 21, 2021A 5.1 magnitude earthquake with the epicentre in Larnaca rattled homes and buildings around Cyprus at around 4:20pm today, January 21.
People as far away as Paphos said their buildings shook in the quake, according to Facebook posts.
The earthquake was at a depth of 10km and around 7km northeast of Larnaca, said earthquake information centre EMSC.
In Nicosia old city, we felt our building move from side to side, meaning it was likely a shallow fault earthquake.
This type of earthquake is known to be less destructive than a subduction zone earthquake which are the largest earthquakes recorded and tend to move the earth up and down in addition to causing tsunamis.
Cyprus lies in an earthquake zone with vulnerable areas all along the coastline from Famagusta to Paphos.
So far, no damages have been reported.
More as we get it.
