Is writing a skill or a talent? In this blog post, writer Sarah Fenwick discusses whether writing is a skill or a talent and what it takes to build a reputation as a professional writer. Learn what a skill is and what a talent is, how they’re different, and how to use them in your writing.

Is writing a skill or a talent?

When I was around 15 years old, people started asking me what I wanted to do in life. I had absolutely no clue what to answer except: I like writing. And, boy, did I like writing. People couldn’t even talk to me because I was too engrossed in writing or reading. But while I had a talent and passion for writing, my skills were lagging behind. I had to learn:

  • how to structure an essay,
  • how to interpret what I was reading in order to summarize it,
  • and all the other bells and whistles of grammar and style.

Do you believe that writing is a natural talent that cannot be learned or developed? Or is it a skill that can be improved through practice and hard work? The debate about whether writing is a skill or a talent runs deep, personally, I believe raw talent can only get you so far, at some point you’ll need to know about the skill of writing.

In this blog post, I’ll explore both sides of the argument and try to answer the question: is writing a skill or an innate talent?

What is a Skill?

A skill is a learned ability, a technique to help you to perform a particular task or activity effectively. Skills like learning the alphabet are developed through training, practice, and repetition over time. Examples of writing skills are:

  • Good sentence structure.
  • Using the appropriate tense, past, present or future.
  • Outlining your article or book.
  • Being aware of different grammatical elements from adjectives to nouns.

Having said that, it’s also a skill to write as you speak. This makes your writing more fluid and natural in addition to communicating your points more directly. Language skills can be acquired by anyone who is willing to put in the time and effort to learn them. I believe it’s a lot like tuning into your own speech, if you record yourself talking to someone, you’ll notice the natural flow of grammar and structure in the conversation, because as children we all learn to talk by practicing and correcting as we go.

When it comes to writing, there are many skills that can be developed to improve one’s writing ability. These skills include grammar, punctuation, sentence structure, and vocabulary. While some people may have a natural talent for writing, these skills can be learned and improved upon through practice and study.

In addition to these technical skills, there are also creative skills that can be developed through writing. These skills include storytelling, character development, and plot structure. While some people may have a natural talent for these creative skills, there’s no doubt in my mind they can also be learned and improved upon through practice and feedback.

What is a Talent?

A talent is a natural ability or aptitude for a particular task or activity. Talents are often innate, hardwired into the individual’s biology rather than being learned or taught. Examples of writing talents include the ability to express oneself in poetry, essays, books and articles in one’s own voice. Talents are often seen as gifts that some people are born with, they can be improved on but already exist within the person’s mind and body.

When it comes to writing, some people may have a natural talent for storytelling or language use. These individuals may find it easy to come up with creative ideas or express themselves through writing. However, having talent alone is not enough to be a successful writer. Writing still requires hard work, practice, and skill development. Even the most talented writer will eventually need to polish their skills.

Examples of Writing Skills

There are many different writing skills that can be developed to improve one’s writing ability. These skills include:

Grammar and Punctuation:

Good writing requires proper grammar and punctuation. These skills can be learned through study and practice. By mastering these skills, writers can ensure that their writing is clear and easy to understand.

Sentence Structure:

Sentence structure is another important writing skill. By varying sentence length and structure, writers can create more engaging and interesting writing. This skill can be developed through practice and feedback.

Vocabulary:

Having a strong vocabulary is essential for good writing. By learning new words and using them effectively, writers can create more nuanced and descriptive writing. This skill can be developed through reading and study. Always have a Thesaurus on hand and keep your language simple and direct, there’s no need to overcomplicate things to look more intelligent. The simplest things are often the most intelligent.

Examples of Writing Talents

While writing skills can be learned and developed, there are writing talents that come more naturally for some than others.

Creativity:

Some writers have a natural talent for creativity and come up with new ideas as a natural part of their thinking process. They’re able to come up with unique and engaging stories and characters without much effort. While this talent cannot easily be taught, it can be honed through practice and feedback. If you feel you don’t have this innate talent, try playing word games to trigger your creativity because I believe everyone can tap into their creative side.

Language Use:

‘He Wishes for the Cloths of Heaven’

Had I the heavens’ embroidered cloths,

Enwrought with golden and silver light,

The blue and the dim and the dark cloths

Of night and light and the half light,

I would spread the cloths under your feet …

W. B. Yeats.

is writing a skill or a talent? wb yeats was an amazing writer

Iris poet W. B. Yeats had a natural talent for language use. He used words and phrases in a way that was both engaging and poetic. This talent is difficult to learn as a skill, but it can be developed through reading and studying the works of other great writers. I don’t recommend imitating them, instead find your own voice. The things that made Yeats’ writing so different were his voice, the words he chose, and his cultural background, he was unique and so are you.

Can Writing be Learned?

Yes, writing can be learned. While some people may have a natural talent for writing, anyone who’s willing can learn to write effectively with practice and study. By developing good writing habits and putting in the time and effort to learn the necessary skills, you can become a good writer.

Still, writing isn’t easy. You must be ready for hard work, dedication, and a willingness to learn from mistakes. I’ve learned that writing is a craft that must be practiced consistently in order to improve.

Can Writing be Improved?

Yes, writing can be improved with practice and feedback. By seeking out feedback from others and continuously practicing, writers can identify areas where they need to improve and work to develop their skills.

It’s important for writers to be open to feedback and to take constructive criticism in stride. By using feedback to improve their writing, writers can become more confident in their abilities and produce better work. In some ways, rejection and criticism can drive you to improve your writing and stay determined to succeed.

So, is writing a skill or a talent? The answer is that it’s both. While some people may have a natural talent for writing, anyone with the determination to do so can learn to write effectively with practice and study. Writing requires a combination of skills and talents, including grammar, punctuation, creativity, and language use. By developing these skills and honing your talents, you can produce engaging and effective writing that resonates with your readers.
