October 4th is World Animal Day, and it’s being celebrated in Cyprus with a concert by the fantastic Cypriot singer Vakia Stavrou at the Presidential Palace tonight. The show is organised by the Cyprus Voice for Animals and World Animal Day ambassadors Anna Georgallidou and Stella Stylianou. It starts at 7:45, and is in aid of starting a sterilisation fund to deal with the problem of a large number of stray cats and dogs. Entrance fee is 10 Euros and you should bring your ID card with you. For more information, call 99581339.
Other initiatives include social media campaigns in which public figures advocate for animal welfare by taking photos of themselves with their pets and adding a quote about how they feel about animals.
The initiative by independent rescuers is backed by the state Veterinarian Service and the Pancyprian Coordinating Committee for Animal Welfare. Unless pets are neutered, one dog can give birth to another 10 dogs, and one cat to six or eight kittens. Then their owners can’t take care of so many animals and either abandon them or let them run away when they’re on heat.
MISSION OF WORLD ANIMAL DAY
To raise the status of animals in order to improve welfare standards around the globe. Building the celebration of World Animal Day unites the animal welfare movement, mobilising it into a global force to make the world a better place for all animals. It’s celebrated in different ways in every country, irrespective of nationality, religion, faith or political ideology. Through increased awareness and education we can create a world where animals are always recognised as sentient beings and full regard is always paid to their welfare.
