Residents of Mesa Geitonia woke up at 4:30 am to the sounds of explosions after several cars were set on fire in the parking area of an apartment building near Super Home Centre in Limassol. Police are investigating the scene, and currently have no information about who set off the dangerous explosions which damaged four parked cars, destroying them completely. At this point, there are no suspects, a Limassol detective told CyprusNewsReport.com.
No one was hurt in the incident. It appears that whoever was responsible doused the cars in a flammable liquid. Forensic experts are still studying the crime scene, added the detective.
The damage was mainly to the parked cars and the building’s facade, which was blackened and burned.
Frightened residents reported shouting, and what sounded like shots fired but could have been tires exploding in the intense heat.
It’s a matter of speculation about who set the fire. There’s a strong possibility that the arson is linked to organised crime, which is a huge challenge for the authorities in Limassol, particularly when it comes to drugs or gambling. Unsettled debts or disagreements between gang members often lead to car bombs or even murder.
