Limassol Court Remands British Man on Child Pornography Allegations

Limassol District Court has remanded a 44-year-old British man on suspicion of being part of an international child pornography ring, said authorities.

Interpol has an arrest warrant out for him and he was taken into custody on January 17th. The man’s computer equipment and other evidence has been taken as evidence in what police consider to be a very serious case of child pornography.

The number of these crimes has tripled in Cyprus, rising to 110 so far in 2015 from just 32 in 2013, according to statistics from the cyber crime unit, as reported by the state news agency.

The frightening trend could be much worse in reality, because these are just the reported cases discovered by the unit, which has the latest technology to track down child molesters.

One of the keys to preventing these crimes against children is for parents to monitor their kids’ social media activity and make sure they know all their online friends in person.

Child pornography is by far the leading cause of cybercrime in Cyprus, said the unit’s head Andreas Anastasiades. Cyber bullying and hacking attacks on companies are also rising, he said.
